the priest's diary                                  Peter Schwartz & Kim Goransson

'the priest's diary' was quite an undertaking. After meeting Kim and agreeing that salamanders were really fucking cool, we became really great friends. After realizing we shared almost the exact same sense of poetic values (a small miracle in itself) we decided on collaborating. Kim has studied the Bible very closely and came up with that faithful line: "my chapel is where I am weakest". From that alone we soon realized our storyline: a poem about a priest banished from the Church and sent to convert natives on an obscure island. From there, the priest himself took over and kicked us both out. We worked well over 150 hours on this poem, often staying up all night, debating the merits of every word, break, and comma. Perhaps because this poem is so serious, it was during those nights that we learned the value of humor. To overcome the incredible frustration of such long bouts of concentrated labor, we would make each other laugh by suggesting the most ridiculous lines possible. It was this poem that taught us each how to be
ambitious about a poem, to make it not just a bunch of
words, but in fact, an event. --- PS
