a a a a about Shin Yu Pai & David Lukowski: I am the author of Unnecessary Roughness (xPress(ed), 2005), Equivalence (La Alameda, 2003) and Ten Thousand Miles of Mountains and Rivers (Third Ear Books, 1998). David is a graduate student at Hunter College, NY and has exhibited his work at the Sherborn Public Library and Grinnell College. (SYP) a a a a about their collaboration: For
the poems from "Nutritional Feed", I knew David and his work
for a long time and knew that I wanted to write about his work. We
talked about his ideas and painting process and I spent several months
living with his images. I started writing poems responding to his
paintings during a residency at the MacDowell Colony when I had the
space to really open up to looking at the work in new ways.
David's work appropriates a great deal from pop culture and also makes
use of text - I experimented with using David's language in my poems
which are very much engaged in a conversation with his paintings - the
language, process, and materiality of his work. As I continued
with the project, he provided other paintings which I composed responses
for.

a a a about Shin Yu Pai's other collaborations: This
is not my first collaborative project - I have collaborated on past
projects with Larry Lee (sculptor and installation artist), Mei-Kuang
Chen (dancer/choreographer for Hedwig Dances in Chicago), and with
Ferenc Suto (fine art photographer). My own aesthetic is extremely
interdisciplinary and the writing program which I studied in was based
at an art school. I have always been interested in crossing
between disciplines and am currently engaged in several collaborative
projects including an opera libretto and a haiku project. (SYP) |
